Once upon a Dungeon - Infinity - Indie RPG/Dungeon Crawler at its Finest

Great video games often provide something that is known as instant appeal. That means that for a lot of players, they require only a glance at their game art or gameplay video to let them know that they could have days and days of fun playing that title. Once upon a Dungeon - Infinity is an indie title that offers this textbook instant appeal for all fans of role-playing games, dungeon crawlers, and roguelike genres.

At its core, this title by Koto Games is a turn-based, hack&slash RPG, set in the Once upon a Dungeon series. It holds true to all of the traditional elements of roguelikes, but sets them into the world of Slavic mythology, including its powerful gods. Here, players are tasked with diving into dungeons that are procedurally generated and where countless dangerous monsters, but valuable loot as well, await. From there, players need to fight, loot, craft, and advance their character as they ultimately work to face the game's main enemy, simply called the Fallen One.

One of the main factors behind Once upon a Dungeon - Infinity's instant appeal is the clearly intricate gameplay design, which also feels immediately accessible. The players have a huge range of possibilities at their disposal, including items used for healing, spells, and armaments, but also gauges for things like health and mana. This shows that the game's design took the best classic RPG elements and incorporates them into its overall style and aesthetics, which reside on clean graphics and a strong influence of the proto-Slavic iconography and visual design.

Finally, the game even comes with a well-developed mechanic for allies. In the game, players can gather allies for their party, as any true RPG should include, but here, these also gather experience and level up, while at the same time, in battles, they heal themselves and do other useful stuff to help the player. Having a setup like that shows the amount of work that went into this title.

Once upon a Dungeon - Infinity is a title that is still in Early Access on Steam. That means that it will continue to improve, but even now, it is nearly impossible to imagine a fan of RPGs or roguelikes who wouldn't enjoy trying it out. If you're partial to a bit of adventuring and dungeon-crawling, check out the same game on Steam and see if you have what it takes to bring down the Fallen One!
