In the case of indie video games, it's always easy to tell just how much the developers are interested in a particular topic. Naturally, this notion becomes a bit blurred when the focal point of the games is something broader and more general, but in the case of Spaciens, there's zero doubt that the studio behind it is immensely fascinated by a single topic. That topic is the genre of science fiction in all of its shapes and forms.
The same fascination instantly shines through in the case of their browser-based space-survival / simulation game. Starting with the game's visual design and its UI/UX, all the way to the narrative and the tidbits of information that the game provides in each playthrough, it's clear that the people behind it live and breathe sci-fi. I had the privilege of trying it out not long ago, when I created my Let's Play video, which you can check out right here.
As you can see in the clip, Spaciens provides an experience that is extremely in-depth. After a couple of playthroughs, I got a sense that I only managed to scratch its surface. Initially, the game offers a simple space-based survival setup - keep going until you reach safety with your spaceship. That involves the management of resources and actions in each turn, but quickly adds to that a series of random events that continue to push the envelope in the same vessel.
On top of that, the game provides a complex system of ship functioning, where both it and the crew, as well as the players individually, have to be managed and somehow avoid the ever-increasing disaster levels. That builds up a great atmosphere that will be more than familiar to all sci-fi fans. Furthermore, anyone into simulations would also feel right at home with the game.
Overall, it seems like Spaciens provides an evolving experience that has elements of games like Among Us, but also films like the Aliens series and many more from the rich domain of science fiction. Presently, the game is still in its early access phase and is continuously improving - the team has added changes and updates in a short period since I played it the last time. If you're a sci-fi fan as well and you enjoy some complex, survival-sim setups, join the developer's Discord server and, of course, try the game in your browser right now to see how long you'll last in the dead of deep space!
